Educational Web App Meets Augmented Reality

Wild animals in your living room: WILTOPIA is an immersive and educative 3D experience built as a Progressive Web App (PWA) with the headless CMS Storyblok as a backend.

AUGMENTED REALITY FEATURES

For the new WILTOPIA product line, Sensory-Minds has developed a Progressive Web App (PWA) for PLAYMOBIL, a well-known brand of the Horst Brandstätter Group. The app allows children to bring wild animals right into their living room. Each package of the new WILTOPIA product line contains a PLAYMOBIL animal figure made of approximately 80% recycled material, such as an elephant, tiger, eagle, or orangutan.

Additionally, each animal figure comes with a corresponding trading card, which features a fact sheet on the respective animal and a QR code. When scanning this QR code with a smartphone, tablet, or even a laptop with a camera, a digital version of the trading card opens, and a 3D animal is unlocked.

The WILTOPIA PWA provides children with an immersive experience. Through augmented reality, children can bring 3D models of various wild animals into their room, take photos with them, and learn about their favorite animals by listening to audio tracks. The content is available in ten languages and is managed using the headless CMS Storyblok. Currently, there are already almost fifty 3D animals available, and more are continually being added.

Using the native augmented reality features of Apple and Android, the WILTOPIA app allows users to place animals in their living space, have photo sessions with the wild animals, and listen to audio plays to learn about them. In addition to AR-3D audio plays, the PWA offers children animal quizes and numerous coloring pages.

The Playmobil Wiltopia PWA is a double winner at the Digital Impact Awards 2023: SILVER for Best use of augmented reality or virtual reality and BRONZE for Best use of digital from the education sector.

Implementation

Sensory-Minds developed the concept together with PLAYMOBIL and the advertising agency Kastner Frankfurt. The main idea was to introduce children in a playful way to the animals of our earth and the topic of sustainability. For the implementation, Sensory-Minds went for a mobile-first approach and the realization as a PWA.


In the background, Sensory-Minds uses the headless CMS Storyblok to make content maintenance as easy and intuitive as possible. This not only allows to create new content pages, but also to provide and publish assets such as the required 3D and audio files very quickly.
